Poker: The Grand Dame of Card Games Poker is a very popular game that has brought a lot of people joy and most other people the same amount of misery. Some people earn a living off playing poker so some money can be had from playing it and a life spent playing poker is possible if not easily sustainable. However, it is usually the casinos and gambling houses that offer poker playing facilities that consistently profit from playing poker. Even if poker cannot be counted on to bring certain monetary benefit, though, the challenge of this game never fails to lure players. What is Poker?Poker is a card game that can be won by having great cards and great strategy. Great cards make for great combinations, which is the surest way of winning a game. However, a person who has bad or mediocre cards can still win the pot when he makes a bet that nobody else at the table wants to match or raise. There are many variants of poker and they vary usually in the number of cards dealt before betting begins, if the cards are dealt face up or down, and if the cards can be replaced or not. Some popular variants are stud poker, draw poker and community card poker. How is Poker Played?A game of poker consists of many hands, and each hand is dealt by a different player who has the white chip called a dealer buck. The dealer for each hand could also be the casino personnel when play occurs at a casino. For each hand, the dealer shuffles the cards and distributes the cards face-up or down (depending on the type of poker being played) to the players, one at a time, until each player has the right number of cards. The person charged with betting on that hand now makes a bet to open what is known as the betting round. The bet must be met by the other players in the table by folding their cards, calling the bet, or raising the wager. If everybody folds after the bet, the one who made the bet wins the hand and no further play is necessary and another hand can begin. If the bet is matched or raised, the game continues and the players develop their card combinations by replacing their cards or by getting extra cards from the dealer. Betting continues and the pot accumulates. Making a bet in the betting round can be done by anyone when he has a very good card combination or when he feels that he has a very good chance of bluffing his way to a win. The betting round or rounds finally end when somebody makes a bet that nobody wouldn’t or couldn’t match, or when the limit for betting is reached and the remaining players have to reveal their cards. In the first case, the one who made the unchallenged bet takes the pot. In the second case, the one who has a better combination of cards wins. |
