Draw Poker Variants
Draw Poker Variants
Draw poker is very popular; it is usually called the beginners’ poker because most people learn playing poker through this poker variant. Draw poker is named such because players have a chance to draw a new set of cards in the course of a game. The following are two draw poker variants.
Five-card Draw Poker
This is the most basic draw poker game variant and it is played from two to eight players. At the start of the game, the players ante up; the amount of the initial wager is fixed and standard for all players and they add up to make up the pot. Each player will then get dealt five cards face-down. After the players had taken a look at their own cards, the player to the dealer’s left then opens up the betting. The remaining players can now draw replacements for at most three of their cards. Sometimes, it is possible to replace all four cards if a player holds an ace. After the draw, the player to the dealer’s left begins another round or rounds of betting. After the betting has ended, the showdown ensues and the remaining players need to show their hands.
In five-card draw poker, there are variants that let players replace their cards for as much as two times (double draw) or three times (triple draw) in the game. The typical five-card draw follows the usual hand ranking and the high hand usually takes the pot. However, there are variants to five-card draw poker that deviates from the natural order of hands. There are high-low split variations where the player with the highest hand and the player with the lowest hand divide the pot. There are also some variants that give the pot to the lowest hand.
Jacks to Open or Jackpots
In Jacks to Open, the five cards are still dealt to players face-down after each player has anted up. However, the betting does not begin with the player to the left of the dealer. The person who has a pair of jacks or better in his initial hand can begin the betting round or rounds. If no player has a betting opener pair, then the cards are collected and dealt again, after another ante is made by each player. This will go on and on until a player gets the right to place a bet. Once a bet is made, the other players who do not have jacks or better can join the betting. This game then proceeds like a standard five-card poker until the game reaches the showdown phase. In Jacks or better, the player who has three of a kind (a triple) or better wins the pot. If no player who reached the showdown phase has a three of a kind combination, then all payers ante up once again and the remaining players are dealt another set of five cards.
These two types of draw poker games are more often played at home than in casinos. There are more draw poker variants than these two and they include anaconda, all for one or one for all, dogbutt, monkey love and a lot more.
